The closure of the Oakington Immigration Reception Centre

10 November 2010

The Joint Promoters of Northstowe; The Homes and Communities Agency (HCA), the national housing and regeneration agency, and master developer Gallagher Longstanton Ltd, are committed to working with all partners involved to bring forward the site for housing development.  Commercial negotiations are still ongoing and no outcome has yet been reached.

The HCA is land owner of the former Oakington Barracks and Airfield.  Following the closure of the Oakington Immigration Reception Centre, the HCA remains committed to keeping the site safe and secure until it can be brought forward for development.  The Agency will be looking at the best ways to make use of the site in the interim, where this is appropriate and practical and at no major cost to the public purse.

Managing the ongoing maintenance liabilities is an important aspect of estate management.    Removing some of the buildings will be a necessary part of this process.  A technical assessment of the buildings is being carried out, and removal of some buildings will commence over the coming months.    These initial works are necessary now, and also act as preparation work for the time when negotiations reach a close and the site is brought forward for development.

Both the Joint Promoters of Northstowe; the HCA and Gallagher, are confident that Northstowe can be delivered and will continue to explore ways, with all partners involved, in which early phases of the project could be brought forward in the short term, as part of a comprehensive development of the wider vision for Northstowe as a new community.
