Joint Promoters of Northstowe comment on implications of CSR

21 October 2010

The Joint Promoters, Gallagher and the Homes and Communities Agency, reconfirm their commitment to the Northstowe project and continue to work closely with the local authorities and other local partners involved to bring forward the site for development..

The statement made by the Department for Transport, as part of the Government’s Spending Review, recognising that the A14 corridor faces severe congestion, and that mobility along the route is critical for economic success and growth is welcomed. The Joint Promoters support the DfT’s proposal for a study to identify cost effective and practical proposals which will bring benefits and relieve congestion and look across transport modes to ensure sustainable proposals come forward for the improvement of this important route. The Joint Promoters will co-operate fully with this study.

The Joint Promoters believe that Northstowe continues to be the most sustainable location, outside Cambridge, for a major development which is necessary to meet the need for new homes and jobs in the Cambridge growth area. A new community in the A14 corridor delivered to high design and environmental standards with access to good quality public transport, including the guided busway, which is supported by the local authorities, is the most effective way of meeting these needs. This approach is consistent with the proposal for the delivery of homes and places advocated by the Government in its localism agenda.

The Joint Promoters are confident that Northstowe can be delivered.  They will continue to explore ways in which early phases of the project could be brought forward in the short term as part of a comprehensive development of the wider vision for Northstowe as a new community.

Commercial negotiations to deliver this are still ongoing and no outcome has yet been reached.  However, the delivery of Northstowe with housing, employment, commercial and recreational facilities will make an important contribution to the economic growth of the Cambridge area and the Joint Promoters remain fully committed to the scheme.
