Homes

Housing is at the heart of Northstowe with up to 10,000 new homes to be built in the town. Northstowe will include a variety of housing types for a variety of people and budgets.

Developer Bloor Homes are building the first 92 homes in Phase 1, with houses ranging from two to five bedrooms. The first families moved into Northstowe in May 2017 with more continuing to arrive. The new homes are close to the Longstanton Park & Ride where residents have easy access to the guided bus way and excellent public transport links, community buildings and a new school.

By the end of 2017 all five house builders should be active on the first Phase of Northstowe. Homes will be completed on phase 2 from Spring 2019.

Types of housing

There is a strong commitment to provide affordable housing in Northstowe, with over 2,000 affordable homes planned amongst the first 5,000 homes and 300 of these within Phase 1. For Phase 2 it has been agreed with the Homes and Communities Agency that 50% of the housing provision will be affordable (10% will be affordable rent and 40% will be starter homes).

It’s likely that there will be numerous home-buying incentives to aid older buyers, right-sizers, first time buyers, second-steppers and many more. Most homes in Northstowe will be two or three storeys in height with higher four/five storey properties in the heart of the town centre itself.

Design Codes will guide the creation of pleasant neighbourhoods at Northstowe. There has been two public consultations during May/June 2016 and April/May 2017 which have fed into the Phase 2 Design Code for both the Homes and Town. Find out more about those here. Because a number of developers will deliver the town, there will be many different architectural styles linked by consistency in both approach and quality. Character areas taken from the unique and existing features of the landscape will add interest and variety as you walk, cycle or take the bus through the town. There could even be the opportunity in later phases of development for people to buy plots in order to build their own tailor-made homes and potentially some interesting build styles such as off-site manufactured housing.

From the start all properties will be connected by fibre optic cable rather than traditional copper wire. This ‘fibre to the premises’ means that everyone will have access to the fastest broadband connections.
